Any good adventurer knows that you can’t go on a hike without some sustenance ready to be eaten at a moment’s notice. However, summer poses a peculiar problem because of one simple factor: the heat. As exciting as it may be to tackle the trails in warm weather, sun-spoiled food is a downer to even the most exhilarating of mountain challenges. That’s why we’ve stepped in to make you a list of trail snacks that won’t melt in the heat. Gone are the goopy trail mixes and smelly sandwiches! Below are some healthy and energizing alternatives that can sustain even the strongest sun.
1. Tropical Crunch Trail Mix
Ingredients:
1 cup roasted cashews
½ cup dried pineapple pieces
½ cup toasted coconut flakes (unsweetened)
½ cup banana chips
¼ cup pumpkin seeds
Instructions:
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Portion into resealable bags for a sweet, crunchy, and heat-proof tropical snack.
2. Savory Roasted Chickpea Crunch

Ingredients:
1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon sea salt
Instructions:
Pat chickpeas dry. Toss with oil and seasonings. Spread on a baking sheet and roast at 400°F (200°C) for 30–40 minutes, shaking halfway, until crispy. Cool completely before packing.
3. Nutty Apple Sandwiches

Ingredients:
1 large apple, cored and sliced into rounds
3 tablespoons almond butter or peanut butter
2 tablespoons granola (no chocolate)
Sprinkle of cinnamon
Instructions:
Spread nut butter on half the apple slices. Sprinkle with granola and cinnamon. Top with remaining apple slices to make “sandwiches.” Wrap individually for the trail.
4. Spicy Seed & Fruit Energy Clusters
Ingredients:
½ cup sunflower seeds
½ cup pumpkin seeds
½ cup chopped dried apricots
2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions:
Mix seeds, apricots, and cayenne in a bowl. Warm honey/maple syrup slightly and pour over mixture. Stir to coat. Press into mini muffin liners or shape into balls. Let set in the fridge for 30 minutes before packing (they’ll hold up well outside).

4 cups air-popped popcorn
1 tablespoon olive oil
Zest of 1 lemon
